The town “Monument” is a statutory town situated at the base of Rampart Range in El Paso County, Colorado. Pikes National Forest on the west, Foothills and rock outcropping to the north and rolling plains to the east. A small town with a population of around 5500 people, but, with Colorado Springs and the Air Force Academy just 18 miles south, you are close enough to all the attractions found within that city. Denver, the ( “mile high city”), is just 53 miles north of this quaint little town. Monument’s altitude is 6975 ft.
Monument was first settled as a stop along the Rio Grand Railroad in 1872. Incorporated as a town called “Henry’s Station” in 1879. With the railroad, which brought in necessities, people started small businesses and created a town. They later changed the name to Monument after the Monument Creek and Monument Rock.
Monument has a home rule charter government-Governmental policy in a commission and then voted upon the town council & board of trustees.
